Wausau, Marathon County parks opening later due to long winter

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau and Marathon County parks are going to be opening up late this year thanks to the long winter.

Parks superintendent Dan Fiorenza says the deep cold means lots of fixes across the parks system. "All the systems will have to be put back together that were taken apart for the Winter. Water systems will have to be put back together, repairs of water systems that were broke because of the deep frost this year."

That frost means difficulties for the grassy areas as well. "All of our turf areas are a couple weeks away yet and if you get on them too early, we're just going to do a lot of damage to the turf because there's still so much frost in the ground." Fiorenza says that's because water still can't drain properly through the deep frost, so grass and dirt areas are going to be be especially slippery.

Fiorenza estimates it may be a few weeks until everything is ready to go. "Hopefully we'll get some good drying weather and we won't be too far off but we're a couple weeks behind. Usually we're opening ball diamonds up here in relative short order and we're some time away from that."
