WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The owners of a vacant lot on Wausau’s Bridge Street will ask city leaders to change their mind. The Diocese of La Crosse owns the northeast corner at the intersection where Bridge Street meets 17th Avenue and Stevens Drive. They want to sell the land since they no longer plan to expand Wausau Newman on that site. Since it’s undeveloped, the diocese has to pay about $9,400 every year in property taxes.
Wausau’s city council turned down a zoning change last month that would have allowed Kwik Trip to build a convenience store on that corner. Area business owners and residents that believed a medical building would be more appropriate, and that a developer would step forward in a month to buy the land. That didn’t happen.
The diocese plans to ask the city again to change the zoning to a unified development district or an interchange business district so they can try to sell the land to Kwik Trip, if they’re still interested.
