Trevino trial completes 5th day of testimony

ST. PAUL, MN (WSAU) - Wednesday was the fifth day of testimony in the trial of Jeffrey Trevino, the man accused of killing his wife Kira Steger.  This testimony was a bit more emotional for both the families in the courtroom and the legal teams.

The prosecution continued calling witnesses, including Taylor Schultz from Upper River Services, the barge company employee who found Kira Steger’s body in the Mississippi River. Medical Examiner Dr. Michael McGee also testified to the condition of the victim’s body and his observations during the autopsy. That caused a member of both the Trevino family and the Steger family to step out of the courtroom. Bureau of Criminal Apprehension scientists also went into detail about the blood evidence in the home and cars.

The jury will have a late start Thursday, as the defense and prosecution review transcripts of a retired detective’s interview of Jeffrey Trevino. The two sides had a heated exchange about the admissibility of that interview Wednesday.

The testimony shows Kira Steger may have died from suffocation.  Prosecutors believe she died between midnight and 2:00 a.m. February 22nd based upon the findings of the medical examiner.
