Trevino trial: Testimony begins

By Collin Smith, WCCO Radio- Minneapolis reporting for WSAU

ST. PAUL, MN (WCCO) - Testimony began Thursday in St. Paul, Minnesota for the trial of Jeffrey Trevino, the man accused of killing his wife and Wausau area native Kira Steger last February.

Jeffrey Trevino sat quietly, unwavering, as prosecutors depicted him as a jealous, vindictive husband whose rage led him to kill his wife Kira Steger and dump her body in the Mississippi River.

In their opening statement, prosecutors painted Jeffrey Trevino as the worst kind of jealous husband pointing to his anger, control, and deception. As Kira Steger’s younger sister took the stand to testify, those were the qualities that led Kira to want to end the marriage.

Defense attorneys largely ignored character issues and were more materialistic, saying there was really little blood found and DNA evidence is simply unreliable, and with no witnesses to the crime, circumstantial evidence is not enough they say to send Trevino away for life.

The trial continues Friday in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is expected to last two to three weeks.
