WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Leaders from around the Wausau metro area planned to discuss the recent Fire Services Report commissioned by the City of Wausau, but the discussion had to wait.
Municipal leaders and fire department chiefs planned to hear a presentation from study author Kent Greene, and then open up the Wausau Committee of the Whole meeting for questions and answers. There was one big problem. Weather conditions delayed Greene’s flights from South Carolina, and he was unable to make it to Wausau in time for the meeting.
Weston Chief Steve Meilahn says it will be important to look at ways to save money, but it will be up to the individual municipalities’ leaders to decide how. So far, it’s unclear what, if any, changes lie ahead.
Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple previously said they wanted to study locations for a new west side Wausau fire station and see if there were ways to better work together and improve response times.
The Fire Services Report already shows there’s no huge financial advantage to consolidating the five metro fire districts, but there may be ways to save by sharing resources.
