TOMAHAWK, Wis. (WSAU) - Southbound drivers on Highway 51 may have felt like NASCAR drivers for awhile Monday afternoon. Not because of speeding traffic, but because flying debris caused traffic to slow down while officials cleared the road.
A Schofield man driving a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville had his hood fly up and break off of the vehicle. The hood flew backwards into traffic, causing another driver to swerve in an attempt to miss the flying metal. The second driver from the Kaukauna area didn’t totally escape damage, as the hood punctured a tire on his twenty-foot camper trailer.
Lincoln County deputies needed almost two hours to get the snarled traffic moving again.
The Schofield man who lost his hood also lost some money. He was cited for failure to have insurance on his car. He is likely to be held responsible for the damaged trailer tire, as well.
