STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - An attempted abduction of an eight-year-old girl was stopped, in part because of quick thinking by total strangers.
This happened during Jazzfest at Pfiffner Pioneer Park Sunday evening. The victim was told by the male suspect that her mother was looking for her, and he was supposed to take her to the boat landing where she was supposed to go for a boat ride. The girl began yelling for her mother, who didn’t hear her. Several other people in the park started paying attention to the scene. The suspect told the victim to sit on a bench near the playground, as he needed to use the restroom. That suspect never returned, and members of the public helped the girl locate her mother and call police.
Police Chief Kevin Ruder says they are asking witnesses to the incident to contact them. It happened at about 9:00 p.m. Sunday.
The suspect is described as a white male in his 30’s, about 5 foot 6 inches to six feet tall, thin, short brown hair, and wearing glasses. Anyone with information about the suspect is encouraged to call police Sergeant Detective Gruber at 715-346-1518
