STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - Hundreds of UW Stevens Point students moved into dorms and apartments in the last week. They had an opportunity to meet new people and do some community service Saturday before classes start.
It’s called Labor of Love, and features over 700 new students and many returning students for an afternoon of projects.
Coordinator Ben Wilkes says over half of the new students were involved in the day of community service. “Lots of clean up work, a little bit of painting, a little bit of landscaping, working with the elderly on a couple of projects, and different senior homes around the area.”
Wilkes and the Residential Living staff lined up projects for the students over the summer. “We have ten busses sending people to different areas that are over a mile away, and we have several other sites that are within a mile that we have students walking to.”
New students Erin Rennie of Stevens Point and Katherine Erdman of Dodgeville were awaiting their assignments. Rennie looked forward to, “meeting people and just helping out.” Erdman was also anxious to get out of the dorm and meet new people.
