WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) Have you seen the highway birds in Wausau? They're metal sculptures in the median of Stewart Avenue on the city's west side. We now know where they came from, how much they cost, and who's paying for them.
WSAW-TV reports they're part of a city gateway project, to make the city seem more welcoming and interesting to out-of-town visitors. The city has already spent $100,000 on the project, and has another $200,000 budgeted to light them at night. Some will have small LED displays within the sculptures to make them more visible.
Mayor Jim Tipple says the city budgeted for the gateway project, and will expand it to the west-side of Highway 51 next year.
