RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (WSAU) - The new S.A.F.E.R Fire District which will serve Weston and Rib Mountain has made a decision on who will be the chief. The S.A.F.E.R. Fire Commission has selected Rib Mountain Fire Chief Paul Wirth as the chief, and Weston Fire Chief Steve Meilahn as the Assistant Chief.
Don Kimlicka is the President of the Fire Commission. He says choosing one of the two chiefs to lead the combined Rib Mountain and Weston district came down to minor differences. “We asked them both specific questions about their experience and what they envision in the future go arounds. Their actual future go arounds were both identical, but what it boiled down to was who had the higher experience as far as being able to take this from the get-go and those that would actually have to go for a few more months of training.”
Kimlicka says choosing the Chief and Assistant Chief was not the end of their process, because they are evaluating all of the staff to prepare for a different level of services. “There’s still a lot of work to be done as far as identifying the viable candidates for both departments, because the standards that we are setting for the staffing of both stations are actually going to be a higher level than they currently are, so we are going to bring a higher level of abilities to the communities that we serve.”
There are still tasks to complete, but Kimlicka is confident the January 1st start up of the combined fire service will go as planned.
