Wolf hunt: Zone 2 closes Wednesday

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Wisconsin’s second wolf hunt is more successful than last year’s inaugural hunt. So successful, in fact, that the Department of Natural Resources says almost 40% of the season quota has been harvested just one week into the season.

Zone 2 in northeast Wisconsin has already reached 26 wolves, just two short of the zone’s target. That’s why the DNR is closing Zone 2 as of 3:00 p.m. Wednesday.

DNR Land Division Administrator Kurt Thiede says, “The pace of this year’s wolf harvest is higher than the beginning of last season.” He says there could be a variety of factors, and it is difficult to say whether this year is an anomaly & if this could be the norm moving forward. Thiede says they will examine the data after the season to see if any management decisions need to be made.

With the harvest going quickly, Thiede encourages hunters and trappers to check the DNR website & wolf call-in number daily, as zones are likely to close rapidly as quotas are reached.
