JUNCTION CITY, Wis. (WSAU) - Department of Transportation officials are constructing a joint storage facility with Portage County’s Highway Department to store road salt.
The new structure will be near Junction City at the intersection of Highway 10 and 34 North. DOT Spokesperson Kristin McHugh says this will assist Portage County crews with winter maintenance on state highways in the northwest section of the county and reduce the amount of time it takes plow staff to finish clearing the roads.
Now, trucks have to return to Plover if they need to reload with salt or sand.
The building will cost $574,000 and include both storage for salt and a garage for equipment. Earth, Inc. is the primary contractor for the facility.
One hundred percent of the cost is paid from state transportation funds.
