Repairs begin on bridge rails, police seek public tips

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Wausau Department of Public Works officials have ordered the parts and are preparing to replace some expensive nuts and bolts. Police are trying to learn just who stole them from the pedestrian rails on two city bridges.

One hundred thirty-seven stainless steel bolts were removed from the Washington Street bridge. About 100 nuts were removed from the Bridge Street bridge.

Officer John Phillips says they’ve had a few leads, but so far, nothing solid.

The stolen hardware will cost the City of Wausau about $415 to replace, plus another $1,000 in labor to reinstall everything.

Investigators don’t know how the thief was able to take so many pieces without being noticed.

Wausau Police are encouraging people to report unusual observations near the bridges.  You may call in any information to Officer John Phillips at 715-261-7875.  Phillips says anyone working on the bridges should be easily identifiable as a Department of Public Works employee.
