New CMA Duo of the Year Florida Georgia Line traces their best advice back to the man who wrote “The Gambler” for Kenny Rogers . The two got the chance to talk with songwriter Don Schlitz while they were students at Nashville’s Belmont University. The only problem is, they can’t remember exactly what he said.
"There's a conversation in every song, all you have to do is listen,” Brian Kelley offers.
“Or there's a song in every conversation, you just have to listen," Tyler Hubbard counters, laughing-- citing the difference in perception as a perfect example of why they work as a duo.
The two also find inspiration from “Live Like You Were Dying” songwriter Craig Wiseman . “You’re not gonna beat a Craig Wiseman song, ‘cause Craig Wiseman wrote it,” Brian says. “So just really push yourself and try to create a unique sound that’s your own. Be yourself, and try to find your own sound. Find what you love and what you know. Our big saying is, ‘Dream big and play loud.’ You never know what can happen.”
