DNR expands social media sharing ahead of gun deer season

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Department of Natural Resources is working to bring the deer season into the digital age this year.

DNR officials are expanding the use of social media this year to try and get more people excited about the hunt, to talk about the hunt and share their stories. Social media manager Trish Nitschke says they've been working with social media sharing over the past two deer seasons and are hoping to get more done this year. "We're expanding it this season, giving people more chance to share their stories, their hunting tradition and what they do while they're out in the field."

Nitschke says they've been steadily opening up more social media services because people use them in different ways. "If you want the latest breaking news new changes and information, Twitter is the place to go. If you want to share your pictures and stories and see some cool things that are going on in the DNR, Facebook is the place to be." She says they're even getting into service you might not think about when hunting. "We're sharing venison recipes on Pinterest. And there really is something for everybody, and that's why we have the wide variety of tools that we have."

There's a wide variety of tool available for the public to join in on, and Nitschke says they're all easy to find. "You can go right down to the bottom of our page at DNR.WI.GOV and you can click on any one of the icons on the bottom of the page and it will take you right to the social media tool that you're looking for."

Officials will also be hosting a series of online chats this week to get ready for the open of the gun deer season on Saturday.
