Merrill taxpayers benefit from boo boo

MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) -- Merrill residents heard some good news about their projected tax bill Tuesday night.

City officials made a mistake in favor of taxpayers. Finance Director Kathy Unertl told the council and those attending the meeting that she did not remove a city loan from the proposed budget that was just paid off November 1st. That took $240,000 off the levy.

The City Council made some other cuts to the budget plan, and finished with a final package that has a zero tax increase for 2014. That’s a welcome sight to many city residents who are already concerned about the jump in their water bills.

Council members cut some engineering costs and some street light work to get the final figure down. The proposed 2014 levy was going to rise 13.3% from 4.87-million dollars to 5.52-million dollars, but the corrected error and new cuts will eliminate that increase.

The Merrill City Council will vote on the final budget package next Tuesday at their 7:00 p.m. meeting.
