Construction workers injured after fall from bridge in La Crosse

LA CROSSE, WI (WTAQ) - A 19-year-old construction worker was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries at last word.

Authorities said he fell 45-feet from a bridge project on Interstate-90 just north of La Crosse.

It happened around 9 a.m. on the Dresbach Bridge in the town of Campbell at the Minnesota border.

Officials said the man fell from the bridge into a coffer dam -- a confined metal structure which provides support for the work area.

Rescuers used a crane, boat, and rescue basket to reach the worker -- who's employed by Ames Construction.

Campbell Fire Chief Nate Melby said the rescue succeeded due to pre-planning between emergency services and the construction firm.

Investigators from the U.S. Occupational Safety-and-Health Administration were expected to arrive at the site to start an investigation.
