MILWAUKEE, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) The Milwaukee Brewers claimed utility player Elian Herrera off waivers yesterday from the L-A Dodgers. The 28-year-old Herrera is expected to provide depth to the Brewer infield. He batted .251 in 71 games over the past two years -- mainly in 2012.
Herrera had one homer and 17 R-B-I's in 71 games over that period. He's a switch hitter who has played second base, short, third, and all three outfield spots.
Milwaukee now has 36 players on its 40-man roster. The team recently re-instated Ryan Braun after his 65-game season-ending drug suspension.
The Brewers did not make a 14-point-one million dollar qualifying offer for first baseman Corey Hart, who becomes a free agent after having surgery on both his knees earlier this year. It's possible the 31-year-old Hart can still re-up with Milwaukee, depending on his health.
