STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) - One vote was done Monday night. The final vote happens Tuesday for a change in emergency communications that some say should have happened over 40 years ago.
For the past five months, Portage County and the City of Stevens Point have been negotiating back and forth to see if they could merge their two emergency dispatch centers. The present dispatch operations are across the street from each other.
The discussions involved several people through various committees and the Stevens Point Police and Fire Commission. They had concerns about retaining existing staff and creation of a board to insure both entities have a say in the new center’s operations. Monday night, the Stevens Point City Council approved the Joint Dispatch resolution unanimously on a voice vote. The Portage County Board of Supervisors just might do the same thing Tuesday. If they do, both dispatch teams will be working to function as one operation by August 4th at the county’s newly remodeled dispatch center.
What seemed unlikely six months ago is almost certain to happen Tuesday.
