Camp Pepin reopening after nearly 50 kids get sick

STOCKHOLM, WI (WTAQ) - A camp in far western Wisconsin is re-opening Monday, after about four dozen fifth-graders got sick during their annual spring visit last week.

The director at Camp Pepin, Mike Melstad, says everything has been sanitized from top to bottom.

That was after almost 50 youngsters from Farmington Minnesota came down from what officials thought was the novovirus.

The 78-year-old Camp Pepin is located near Stockholm on the Wisconsin side of the border with Minnesota. It’s run by the YMCA of Red Wing Minnesota.

Officials believe a youngster brought the virus to the camp and got others sick last Tuesday night.

School principal Laura Pierce said youngsters reported similar symptoms before the outbreak at Camp Pepin.
