MILWAUKEE, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) The Brewers have reportedly approached Jean Segura’s agent about a long-term contract, even though the team already controls him and his salary through 2018. Segura’s agent, Joe Klein, tells Fox Sports that the Brewers contacted him a month ago with an offer. But Klein says it’s hard to determine what the right numbers would be, since Segura is only 23 and has played just 80 Major League games.
He was traded to Milwaukee last July in the deal that sent Zack Greinke to the Angels. Segura is second in the National League with a .359 batting average. He has seven homers and 18 R-B-I’s, and has been solid in the field.
Brewers’ general manager Doug Melvin said a deal is not imminent. Manager Ron Roenicke said those kinds of deals are gambles – but he says Segura is doing everything right this season, and he’s becoming a great player.
Segura makes 492-thousand dollars, close to the league minimum. He’s not due for salary arbitration until 2016.
