Fiers Called Up With Heavy Heart

PITTSBURGH, PA (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Brewers' right-hander Mike Fiers pitched with a heavy heart on Mother's Day. He had mixed feelings about being recalled by the Crew as he left his gravely-ill mother.

Linda Korman has suffered from lupus for many years, and she just recently had a hard-time breathing. Fiers started the season with the Brewers, but was demoted to Triple-"A" Nashville after a rough start. Last week, the Brewers transferred him to Class-"A" Brevard County so he could be close to his mother just two hours away. Fiers said he was very grateful for the club's gesture.

On Saturday, assistant general manager Gord Ash called and asked if Fiers wanted the promotion. And his mother said quote, "Get out of here, you've got a job." He visited her one final time early yesterday morning before flying to Cincinnati.

Fiers gave up one hit in two innings, a solo homer to Xavier Paul in Milwaukee's 5-1 loss to the Reds. He was called up after Tom Gorzelanny went on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis.

Fiers' mother, meanwhile, was feeling better the last couple days – and he left her with renewed hope for her recovery.
