MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The Joint Committee on Finance is putting some spending restrictions on the embattled Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
On Thursday, the committee voted to add accountability provisions in the budget. It was a party line vote.
The provision would prevent WEDC from spending any money in the second year of the budget until lawmakers were shown that improvements had been made.
A scathing audit released last week called into question WEDC operations.
The audit says the job creation agency did not follow state law, failed to track million of dollars in loans, and gave money to ineligible businesses.
Democrats have been critical of the agency, even before it was created, saying it lacked accountability. They wanted to cut funding completely.
