Snow and rain last week reduces risk of wildfires

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Last week’s snow and rain has reduced the risk of wildfires of Wisconsin, at least for now.

The state DNR’s Web site shows that none of the 72 counties had high fire dangers Monday morning.

31 counties had moderate risk, close to a line from Platteville in southwest Wisconsin to Florence in the northeast. The other 41 counties had low wildfire risks.

Sunday, a 76-year-old man collapsed while burning garbage that got away and started a grass fire near Tomahawk. He was hospitalized in critical condition at last word, and officials said a medical condition might have caused him to collapse.

Earlier last week, the DNR said the spring wildlife season had picked up considerably.

More than 100 fires burned 236 acres in the parts of the states where the DNR has the responsibility for fire suppression.

Forecasters call for a mostly dry week throughout Wisconsin. There’s a chance of rain from Wednesday through Friday.
