WAUWATOUSA, Wisc (WSAU-Wheeler News)  Funeral services will be held today in Wauwatosa for a Wisconsin legal pioneer. 99-year-old Mary Riedl died last Thursday at a hospice care facility.

The State Bar Association honored her in 1998 as one of Wisconsin’s first 150 female pioneers in law. That’s after she was one of only two women to graduate in the Marquette Law School’s Class of 1936.

Riedl was born as Mary Wendt. The Journal Sentinel said her father was Milwaukee’s city comptroller in the 1930’s-and-40’s. She joined the Navy during World War Two as a wave, as left as a lieutenant commander four years later. In the 1960’s, Riedl served as a contract administrator for NASA and the Defense Department. She was later an adjudicator of benefits for the Veterans’ Administration, before retiring from the federal government in 1980.
