2013 Borgess 5K runners hurl to the finish line in more ways than one

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – The 2013 Borgess Run for the Health it saw over 8,000 participants cross the finish line on Nazareth’s campus Sunday. Some came across briskly high-fiving the massive crowd of supporters. Others came across winded and gasping for air after a hard fought race. But then there were some that shared a bit more with the crowd.

As unpleasant and uncomfortable as it may be, volunteers for any race know that where there is running there will be vomiting. This year however seemed to reach a new high of runners that joined in what was dubbed the “puke-zone” of the race.

Race volunteers on site were prepared for the influx (or more appropriately out-flux) of runners that shared their morning breakfast at the finish line. A general consensus by volunteers was that many more runners were joining the “puke-zone” squad this year versus 2012.

“It’s always the 5K-ers more so than anyone else,” one Borgess volunteer said, “They come unprepared and suffer the consequences.” Likely due to course difficulty and undertraining, many more runners were seen feeling the wicked results of a run.

The Borgess 5K is a 3.1 mile run that most would consider a more challenging course due to its rolling terrain. The most difficult part of the race is near the end on Brook Dr where runners face a steep and steady incline that is no short jaunt.

According to LIVESTRONG.com, the causes of hurling after a race can be anything from dehydration to over-hydration. Some simple prevention methods are making sure you take in the suggested amount of water the day before a race, and then drinking frequent smaller mouthfuls in accordance with your run.
