DNR reports high danger for wildfires

by

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  Even with Tuesday night’s scattered showers, much of Wisconsin is at risk for grass and forest fires.

The Department of Natural Resources declared ten counties as very dry and a very high risk for fires. Marathon, Wood, Portage, Clark, Adams, and Juneau are among them. About half of the state has a high fire risk.

Wildfire Prevention Specialist Catherine Koele says conditions change quickly, and the dry ground with erratic winds can lead to dangerous fires. She says the late winter helped, but strong winds and temperatures in the 70s and 80s can lead to more fires now.

May local units of government have already banned backyard fires and burning barrels until the conditions change.

The DNR has a website showing which counties have been declared high risks for fire.
