WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - The homeless shelter that recently opened in Wausau is extending its season by a couple of weeks. The extended cold weather and snow cover has prompted the extension.
Diane Borchardt from Catholic Charities Wausau Community Warming Center says they planned to close March 31st, but it became clear the need was going to last a little longer. Borchardt says they will keep the doors open until April 15, 2013.
As of March 26, the Wausau Community Warming Center has provided 300 night stays, averaging 11 guests per night. Police and citizens also reported to the Wausau City Council Tuesday evening that the shelter has been a big help and that there have been no problems as participants have worked well with the volunteer staff.
The center is tentatively planning to reopen November 1st for the winter months.
