WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Weston's fire chief is praising a joint training exercise at a controlled burn in Wausau.
Wausau fire crews along with several Weston volunteer fire fighters took part in a controlled burn of a blighted home on Chicago Avenue on Monday. Weston fire chief Steve Meilahn says they're happy to take part. "It allows us to teach safety items that we simply can't duplicate in a building without live fire." Meilahn says that firefighters need to be able to experience the sounds and feeling of a burning building in order to properly know what sorts of things they need to watch for while inside one.
The city of Wausau invited Weston to the exercise this week because many of their officers and firemen have already gotten experience in previous controlled burns the city has undertaken. Meilahn says it's a good way to build community. "Any training that we can do to work with neighbors is important."
