MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Local groups that monitor conservation projects can get funding assistance from the state.

The DNR has a Citizen-Based Monitoring Partnership Program that’s taking applications through April 26th.

The grants provide seed money to either start volunteer monitoring programs, or expand existing ones. About 18 to 25 programs get grants each year that range up to $5,000 each.

The funding began in 2004 – and since then, 180 projects have received almost $600,000 in state assistance.

Among other things, the money has helped groups monitor streams in Buffalo County – water quality in Fond du Lac County – and invasive species in Eau Claire’s waterways.

The DNR will notify this year’s grant-winners on May 24th.
