MADISON - The Department of Workforce Development is out with new jobs numbers showing unemployment up slightly in January of this year over 2012.

Preliminary unemployment was up in all of the Metro areas between December and January, with the highest unemployment in Racine with 9.8 percent. Unemployment was up 0.8 percent in the Wausau and 1.1 percent in Stevens Point area over last January. Economist Tom Welsh says the uptick is not too troubling. "We'd rather see that going down, but we're not too concerned because we're seeing other positive things going on."

Welsh says other signs and indicators on the economy are still good. "One of those warning signs is first time unemployment and we haven't seen spikes in those claims yet." Wisconsin's unemployment rate moved from 6.7 to 7.0 percent but still remains under the national average of 7.9 percent.
