WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - A annual event in Wausau is in limbo after some legal trouble.
The annual Exhibitour event with Wausau Area Events has been running for years with a special waiver. City council president Lisa Rasmussen says Exhibitour got a statewide award in 2012, which prompted attention. "We were getting letters from communities all over the state asking how we were pulling this off. 'How are you getting around Chapter 125?'" City attorney Anne Jacobson called on the Department of Revenue and the League of Municipalities for a review, and both said the city is violating state statutes.
The city's public health and safety committee denied a waiver on open intoxicants at this week's meeting, and may not be able to issue a picnic license for the event. "Wausau Area Events would have to be in control off all those locations and get permits for all the locations." In addition, the picnic license statute only allows for two locations to serve wine per event.
Wausau Area Events director Kari Rasmussen says they're still exploring their options.
