SUPERIOR, WI (WTAQ) - The 2013 shipping season is almost underway at the Duluth-Superior harbor.
Crews were loading coal Tuesday onto the Mesabi Miner – and the boat was set to depart late Tuesday afternoon or early Wednesday.
Duluth-Superior is the largest port on the Great Lakes Seaway, and 1,000 vessels arrive there each year.
Adele Yorde of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority says the port supports 11,000 jobs of various types – and it contributes $1.5 billion in business revenues to the local economy.
About 40 million tons of cargo are moved each year from Duluth-Superior. They include iron core, grain, coal, limestone, salt, and cement.
