LAKELAND, MI (WHTC) - The Tigers may be idle from Grapefruit League competition on Wednesday, facing their Lakeland neighbors Florida Southern University in an exhibition contest, but the Bengals weren't idle off of the field. The team announced the outright release of outfielder Brennan Boesch after three major league seasons in Detroit. The 27-year-old Californian, who played with the West Michigan Whitecaps during his development in the Tigers' system, hit .240 with 12 homers and 54 RBI last season, but never realized the potential of 2010, when he hit .283 with 16 homers and finished fifth in AL Rookie of the Year balloting. Boesch apparently lost out to Andy Dirks for a roster spot, and Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski told reporters in Lakeland that the team had "just run out of the time to give him here. We’re not in a development stage, we’re in a point of trying to win right now.” Speculation had the Yankees and Mets initially interested in Boesch's services.
