Goose hunt proposed in Wisconsin Rapids

Madison struggles with Canadian goose problem

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis (WSAU) Wisconsin Rapids may have a goose hunt this year to thin out the Canadian Geese that have overrun some city parks.

Last year the DNR ok'ed a permit to oil the eggs of the geese to keep more from being born in the area. That hasn't helped the 200-or-so geese that now live in the city. The population has increased significantly in recent years.

A goose hunt would involve trapping the animals and then euthanizing them in a remote area. Since geese are migratory birds, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would have to approve a permit. The capturing of the geese would be done by an outside contractor, paid by the city.
