Brewers Face Familiar Faces In Loss

by

PHOENIX, AZ (WSAU) The Milwaukee Brewers lost to Team Canada 7-to-4 yesterday in an exhibition game in Phoenix. The Canadians scored four runs in the eighth inning.

Milwaukee relievers Jim Henderson and John Axford then nailed down the win for their home country. Each threw a scoreless inning, and Axford got the save.

Veteran Michael Gonzalez gave up the deciding runs and took the loss for Milwaukee.

Michael Saunders homered for the Canadians, as they look to advance beyond the first round in the World Baseball Classic after making early exits in 2006-and-’09.

Khris Davis homered for Milwaukee, and Rickie Weeks and Carlos Gomez had R-B-I hits. Brewers’ starter Chris Narveson gave up one run on three hits in two-and-two-thirds innings as he competes for a spot in the Crew’s regular season rotation.

Former American League Rookie-of-the-Year Bobby Crosby made his Brewers’ debut at third base after coming off a strained quad muscle. He walked and struck out. Milwaukee returns to Cactus League play this afternoon against Seattle. Brewers’ starter Yovani Gallardo threw one inning for his native Mexico last night, in an exhibition against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. He struck out the side, but needed 24 pitches to do it as he walked a pair.

Gallardo threw to his first opposing hitters after injuring a groin last week. He said he felt no pain, and he threw mostly fastballs.

There was speculation that Gallardo would make a brief appearance for the Brewers yesterday against Team Canada. But the Milwaukee ace decided to join his Mexican teammates to get ready for the World Baseball Classic. He’s due to make a start for his home country on Friday against Team U-S-A.
