Former Athens girls HS basketball coach accused sexual contact with player takes the stand

MOSINEE, WI (WTAQ) - Former girls’ high school basketball coach Rory McKellips told a jury Friday that he never had sexual contact with a player that he admitted having a relationship with.

The 56-year-old McKellips, of Mosinee, took the stand in his own defense on the fifth day of his trial.

McKellips admitted that he gave the girl a pre-paid cell-phone after their parents questioned the numerous hours the two spent on the phone. He said it was not a good idea to give her the phone, and he admitted keeping the phone instead of dumping it in a coal pit – which is what he told police.

McKellips is accused of having sexual contact three times in 2011 with a girl who was 15.

He was coaching at Athens High School at the time.

McKellips also coached at Wisconsin Valley Lutheran and at Mosinee, where one of his girls’ teams won a state championship.

The defense ended its questioning of McKellips earlier today. Prosecutors were questioning him this afternoon.
