Dierks Bentley is one of country music's more restless artists when it comes to switching up his sound and trying new things on each album.  In the past, he's taken left turns like the bluegrass-inspired album Up on the Ridge .  Now Dierks is evolving again with his upcoming album, Riser , led by the dark and sparsely-produced first single, "Bourbon in Kentucky."

He says, "That song kind of signals just the change of sound on this record."

So, why does Dierks put so much time into breaking new musical ground?

"It's just who I am," Dierks explains.  "I love trying different things and going for different things whether it's a bluegrass record or on this record, just really different sounds."

Riser isn't full of songs just like "Bourbon in Kentucky" though. There are a few party songs that will fit nicely into Dierks' live show and a handful of deeper, emotional tracks dealing with the loss of his dad last year.  In the end, Dierks was simply looking for the best songs he could find for the album.

Says Dierks, "Whether I wrote 'em or someone else wrote 'em, just wanted the songs to be good and unique and cool."

"Bourbon in Kentucky" features Kacey Musgraves on background vocals.  Riser will be in stores this fall.
