WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Students and staff were sent home early from John Muir Middle School in Wausau due to heavy smoke inside. School officials pulled the fire alarm at 12:10 p.m.
Director of Pupil Services Jeff Lindell says staff took precautions when they couldn’t find the source. “They had some smoke coming out of the locker room areas, and decided they couldn’t figure out what the source was, so they decided to go ahead and evacuate the students, which is about twenty to twenty-five minutes prior to the end of the summer school day.”
Amy Arlen from the Wausau School District says fire crews and school maintenance staff found the cause of the smoke. “What we had was a bearing that was burning, and it ultimately burned the belt, which caused the smoke, so there was no fire. The alarm was pulled. Students and staff quickly and safely evacuated the building.”
Summer school will be held according to the planned schedule Wednesday. The repairs are scheduled for Wednesday after the kids finish their school day.
