Protect yourself from travelling work crew scammers

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - The return of summer means a return of fly-by-night construction scam artists.

Each summer, groups of travelling contract scam operations travel across the state trying to bilk money out of residents. The groups will offer to do work on your driveway or roof using high pressure sales tactics. State consumer protection administrator Sandy Chalmers says the crews will use shoddy materials, if they complete a job at all. "Days later the driveways are pitted and cracked and these crews are now long gone and these people have no one to call to get their money back."

Chalmers says there's no reason not to turn to local businesses to do your work. "Go with somebody local that will be there in week or months or years down the road if you have problems or questions." She also says it's vital to make sure that you get a contract for your job as well.

Any legitimate travelling work crew will have to be licensed with the state and may have to register in each municipality they're in. If you're approached by one of these crews, ask to check their paperwork or call police if they refuse to show it.

If you have been scammed, get in contact with local authorities.
