ASHLAND, Wis. (WSAU) -- The National Transportation Safety Board released their preliminary crash report for the June 15th incident in Ashland County’s Apostle Islands. NTSB officials say the Piper PA-24-260 struck trees and terrain during a go-around at La Pointe’s Major Gilbert Field.
A witness told investigators he heard a “squealing” noise similar to screeching tires coming from the engine of the aircraft. When the plane throttled up and started climbing again, there was a mid-air explosion.
Two brothers died in the crash. 63-year-old Dr. Rick Renwick of La Crosse and 58-year-old Bruce Renwick of Waunakee were both certified pilots.
Weather was not a factor. The NTSB says the recorded weather sixteen miles away at the Ashland Airport (ASX) was calm wind, 10 mile visibility, and very few clouds at 2,200 feet.NTSB officials are continuing their investigation.
