STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -  No sale. That decision from the Stevens Point City Council for Edgewater Manor. That’s the senior citizen apartment structure on Water Street along the Wisconsin River that has been the topic of sale proposals since the new year.

Community Development Authority Director Michael Ostrowski and Mayor Andrew Halverson supported selling the apartment building to Affordable Senior Housing for just over 1.5 million dollars. Just like in earlier proposals, citizens spoke out against selling the building, saying it was wrong to put it on the tax rolls to help a downtown TIF district become solvent.

Many Council members had leaned towards selling the property as a money losing venture, but when they learned the building has no loans and is producing a small profit, they decided to keep the building and ensure the building’s tenants it would remain a low income senior housing site.

Resident Barb Jacobs did some digging and went door to door to ask people what they thought. She also found financial figures to help convince aldermen to keep the building.  Jacobs says keeping the building in the city gives seniors the stability they need.

Jacobs often speaks against City Council proposals, but she is pleased they payed attention and did the right thing.

The city will now move forward with establishing a building manager and maintenance person or contract those positions out. They will also take care of some needed maintenance, including a troublesome heating system.
