UPDATE: Head-on crash kills one near Nelsonville Sunday


NELSONVILLE, WI  (WSAU)  -  Portage County deputies are still looking into a Sunday traffic crash near Nelsonville that left a Wausau woman dead.

The crash happened on WIS 161 near Nelsonville at about 5:00 p.m. when  23-year-old Alicia A. Schaetzl of Mosinee crossed the centerline while traveling eastbound in a Mazda Tribute SUV. Schaetzl died in the crash.

The westbound vehicle was a white Ford van occupied by 58-year-old Thomas a. Tompkins, 58-year-old Marguerite L. Tompkins, and their dog. The couple was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital by helicopter. The dog survived and ran from the scene.

The road was closed for about three hours so that crash reconstruction crews could investigate and gather evidence. Names have not been released.
