Police say mother locked autistic son in basement

RACINE, Wis (WRN)    A Racine woman will return to court later this month, facing a felony charge for allegedly locking her adult, autistic son in the basement.

Teri Allen appeared in court without an attorney so her initial appearance was postponed until the 17th.According to the criminal complaint, the victim’s grandmother asked police to check on the 23 year-old man’s welfare. When a police officer visited the home, the man, who suffers from ADHD and Asberger’s Syndrome, was sleeping in the locked basement, which was found to contain a single mattress with no sheets and a makeshift toilet consisting of a bucket and a seat. There were no smoke detectors and no way for the man to escape in the case of an emergency.

Police said the 51 year-old Allen also admitted feeding her son through a hole in the wall when she was “being lazy.” The man was placed in the protective custody of his grandmother.

Allen is free on bond and has been charged with “intentionally subjecting an at-risk individual to abuse.
