Wausau warming center set for opening on Friday

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - Wausau's new homeless warming shelter is ready to open up this Friday.

The Community Warming Center held its open house yesterday ahead of a Friday opening. Catholic Charities office manager Shirley Huber says the program is starting off small. "Up to 15 is our limit as to what we can take into the warming center." The Warming Center is keeping the February first opening date, since there is some unfinished training and staff preparation to complete before they can open.

The center is not designed to be a long term option for people, but rather a place where those without a home can stay for the evening. "They will spend the evening, should they choose to leave, they will not be allowed to come back in that evening." Huber says that's for safety for the visitors, who will also need to turn over their things before heading down to the center for the night.

Visitors will be sent out of the building at 7 in the morning, and will be provided with food and clothing as needed.

The Community Warming Center was a project involving many organizations and individuals, with the United Way and Catholic Charities taking lead roles in getting it off the ground.
