Charges expected in Wausau embezzlement case

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  Charges are expected soon against a woman accused of embezzling half of a million dollars from a Wausau company from 2006 until 2011. Investigators are recommending charges against 39-year-old Michelle Walters of Athens for writing unauthorized checks to herself while employed at Northwestern Wisconsin Associates, Incorporated. Walters worked nearly 20 years for the retirement planning company.

Police reports show Walters confessed to taking the money during the six year period. The check writing scam went unnoticed until an accountant thanked NWA President and Owner Matthew Stifler for a donation to Arts Bash... and Stifler said he hadn’t donated to the event in years. Closer examination of the actual checks showed they were written to and signed by Walters.

Stifler was originally not going to press charges, but deal with the repayment agreement on his own until finding out just how much money was involved. He has said the company’s clients were not affected in any way, and the money was all from NWA’s business operating account.
