Shooting range accident victim in critical condition

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) - A man who was hospitalized after an accidental shooting at the Wood County Rifle Range Saturday afternoon near Port Edwards is in critical condition.

The victim is 25-year-old Joseph Sammartino from Wisconsin Rapids. The incident happened at about 3:00 p.m. Sheriff's officials say his father, 53-year-old Stephen Sammartino, was attempting to clear a weapon when it misfired and shot his son in the back.

Sammartino was flown by Spirit Air Ambulance to Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield for treatment. Wood County Sheriff's deputies say they are continuing to look into this incident, but are treating it as an accident.
