The Training Day star has been nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for his performance as airline captain William 'Whip' Whitaker in the movie, and he has revealed the extent of his preparation for the part.

He underwent training in a flight simulator and learned how to get a jet airborne, but there was no need to study landing procedures as the film is based around an air crash probe.
