Child soldier drama Rebelle leads Canadian Screen Awards with 12 nods

From WENN.com

The harrowing film, also known as War Witch, scored an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category last week (10Jan13) and now the movie about a child soldier in the Democratic Republic of Congo has earned a slew of nods in the first-ever Canadian prizegiving.

Among the accolades Rebelle is up for are best picture, best director and best screenplay.

Rebelle will battle it out with the 10-times nominated drama Laurence Anyways, from Quebec resident Xavier Dolan, and the big screen adaptation of Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children, from Deepa Mehta, in all three top categories.

In the TV section, hit cop series Flashpoint - which went off-air for good in December (12) - looks set to be a big winner at the ceremony after earning 11 nods, including best dramatic series and best direction, while comedy Less Than Kind is close behind with 10.

The winners for the Canadian Screen Awards, devised to replace both the annual Genies and Geminis honours, will be announced at an event on 3 March (13). Comedian Martin Short will serve as host.
