MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) - A man killed in a mobile home fire near Mosinee was identified today as 53-year-old Russell Lukensmeyer. Marathon County medical examiner John Larson said an autopsy confirmed the victim’s identity, and he died from smoke inhalation.
Sheriff’s officials said Lukensmeyer had health issues which made it hard for him to get around. He spent several hours at a hospital on Saturday, the day before the blaze.
Fire-fighters did not realize there was a body in the mobile home until three-and-a-half hours after they arrived at the scene. But Mosinee Fire Chief Josh Klug said the heat from the fire was so intense, crews would have had no chance to save Lukensmeyer even if they knew right away that he was inside.
The cause of the blaze is still undetermined. The State Fire Marshall and sheriff’s deputies are continuing to investigate, but Klug has said the exact cause may never be known.
